that are driving the convergence of digital voice, video
and data.
Broadcom provides the industry's broadest portfolio
of state-of-the-art system-on-a-chip and software
solutions to manufacturers of computing and networking
equipment, digital entertainment and broadband access
products, and mobile devices.
Many of today's leading edge products utilize Broadcom technology,
such as the Apple iPhone, Apple Airport Express wireless base
station, the Motorola Razr V3 mobile phone, the TiVo® personal
video recorder, the Nintendo Wii, the palmOne Treo 650 smartphone,
the Linksys wireless router, and Dell's lightweight and high-speed
laptop computers.

The Henry Samueli School of Engineering at UC Irvine,
endowed by Broadcom's co-founder Dr. Henry Samueli in
2000, is one of the nation's fastest growing engineering
schools. Broadcom maintains a close research relationship with
the university, and in 2007, the company moved its corporate
headquarters to Irvine's 185-acre University Research Park.
Broadcom occupies eight new buildings and expanded its Irvine
operations to a new 700,000 square foot campus, which houses
over 1500 employees.
Each year the Henry Samueli School of Engineering
presents a number of distinguished awards to industry
leaders and faculty. In 2005, Dr. Henry T. Nicholas,
III, co-founder and former CEO of Broadcom, was named
the recipient of the UC Irvine "Engineering the
Future Award." Dr. Nicolas' pioneering efforts in
pervasive communications, along with his drive to
accelerate the development of future technologies, have
earned him this award.
Why does Broadcom choose to recruit
engineering and computer science graduates from UC
Irvine?
UC Irvine has one of the top engineering schools in
the country, with talented graduates at all levels
(B.S., M.S., and Ph.D.). More than a third of the
school's faculty members have been elected fellows in
professional societies. Broadcom's proximity to the
University is also an advantage for our internship and
full-time programs, since there are fewer relocation
issues.
What do you see as the strengths of UC
Irvine's engineering and computer science
graduates?
The Henry Samueli School of Engineering attracts
talented engineering faculty and students from across
the nation and abroad. Graduates from the school are
very bright and well trained in the fundamentals.
How do UC Irvine alumni compare to your other
employees?
Some of the very best engineers at Broadcom are UC
Irvine alumni. UC Irvine ranks number two in terms of
number of university alumni employed by Broadcom.
How many UC Irvine engineering graduates are
in leadership positions at Broadcom? What qualities do
they share that make them suited for such
roles?
We have two UC Irvine engineering alumni in
leadership roles at Broadcom Corporation. They are both
brilliant engineers, and they have also demonstrated
very strong leadership skills, which have allowed them
to quickly move up the ranks into management
positions.
How many graduates from UC Irvine's Henry
Samueli School of Engineering currently work at
Broadcom?
We have approximately 90 UCI engineering graduates
currently working at Broadcom. We have hired 65 interns
and 17 full-time candidates from UCI in the last year alone.
