Broadcom Announces Advanced Digital TV Solutions that Address the Global Marketplace and Offer Next Generation Features
With the increase in digital programming and video content along with the migration from analog to digital broadcasts, In-Stat research predicts the digital TV market will grow at a forecasted rate of 16.6% from 2007 to 2011. To enable TV manufacturers to take advantage of this growing digital TV market, Broadcom announced today two new DTV system-on-a-chip (SoC) solutions that offer manufacturers greater connectivity and enhanced interactivity to address the U.S. market.
The BCM3548 and BCM3549 significantly enhance the user experience while continuing to position the TV as a central entertainment appliance for the digital home. Feature sets include video convergence, Ethernet network connectivity, 3D graphical user interfaces and improved picture quality with sharper images and more accurate color. With Ethernet network connectivity, users can connect multiple home networking devices such as media servers, PCs, MP3 devices and portable media players (PMPs) as well as have access to the magnitude of Internet-based multimedia content. As a result, users can share and stream music, photo, movie and Internet-based media content to and from connected devices and TVs. With a 3D graphical user interface, users can flip, rotate and move images that enable TV manufacturers to create a differentiated TV.
These solutions leverage the advanced design of the BCM3556 solution that integrates worldwide standards including digital video broadcast (DVB)-based platforms to address European and Asian markets. Last month, Broadcom also announced support for the WirelessHD™ consortium as a promoter company with a mutual goal of helping to enable wireless connectivity for streaming high definition (HD) content between consumer electronics devices and displays.
Broadcom's single-chip 65nm DTV family consists of the BCM3548 and BCM3549 for premium picture quality and greater connectivity and the BCM3556 for worldwide compatibility to address global markets.
